Google’s Eric Schmidt Speaks Up About HTC Lawsuit

Google’s Eric Schmidt Speaks Up About HTC Lawsuit

Google has been extremely silent while all of their hardware partners are getting sued by Apple. Today during a Google conference in Tokyo, Eric Schmidt spoke up about the situation.

“We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations,” he said. “I’m not too worried about this.”

When asked if Google was going to help HTC pay patent royalties if they lose, he simply said ”We will make sure they don’t lose, then.”

Things are starting to heat up, and I am very interesting in seeing how Google handles all of this.

New Android Market for Phones

New Android Market for Phones

Google just updated their blog with information regarding a new Android Market for phones. They have tweaked the UI and included some very nice swipe gestures for better navigation as well as adding Google Books and Movie rentals. Movie rentals start at $1.99 and have the ability to be “pinned” or downloaded for offline viewing. As with most Android updates, this will be a phased update that starts today for devices running Android 2.2 and up. Hopefully this addresses the issues developers have been having with search as Google irons out the kinks of the new market.

Android Market’s Crappy Search Gets Even Crappier

Android Market’s Crappy Search Gets Even Crappier

Being the king of Internet search you would think that Google’s Android Market would spit out some of the best search results of any “app store”. Well, you would be wrong. Searching the Android Market has never been particularly good and word from many developers is it is getting worse thanks to a bug that started in June. According to a post with over 600 comments in the Android Market forum, developers are seeing all kinds of poor search results when searching for their app in the Android Market. Apps that would usually appear at the top of search results are much further down the list resulting in apps with fewer downloads, lower ratings, and less relevance showing up above the “better” app.

This is not only affecting users who are getting poor search results, but it is costing developers money. Developer of the popular Custom Launcher Icons app stated that his sales have seen a significant drop.

Custom Launcher Icons is down by about 40% from budget so far this month. I complained to an acquaintance on the Android Market team, and he promised to ‘fix it ASAP’, but he seemed to only be interested in fixing specific examples of bad searches.”

Google has promised a fix for this, but as more and more developers are affected, no changes have been made thus far and frustrations are mounting. You move Google.
