Haha.

To Willie's point, EA and other publishers shut down their servers for games after a couple years so if you want online features for FIFA 09 or Madden 2005 you would HAVE to buy a new version.

Willie: I don't think you understand. You don't HAVE to buy a new one to continue to enjoy playing FIFA 09 or Madden 2005!!

I think Nic put on his extra-hot flame suit before responding, but I feel the same as Ryan on this one. Sports games are notorious for churning out the next roster with a slight upgrade to performance/gameplay all for $60 - quite the rip off. I'm used to MMO games: same $60 to buy it and I pay a monthly subscription of ~$15 and get constant updates with a new 'core game' being released once every 3 years or so with a significant difference.

How is it wrong for any FIFA/Madden/NHL/Blitz gamer, who is also paying their respective monthly price, to ask for either bigger differences between renditions of the game OR get a simple roster update annualy? I think the game market perpetuated frequent releases of games with small updates because back in the day there weren't XBox Live updates - just a trip to your local Rose's to buy a game - so we're kind of trained to expect a game every year or frequently. However, now we have broadband that can do significant software changes with simple patches so easily that a new game would take too much time/money to produce so they 'patch' it with updates.

So you, paying a monthly (or annually, then just divide it by 12 to work your scenario into my sentence) price for a similar online service getting less updates (..wait you have to pay for your updates/maps) see no equality difference to some one who is playing a MMO, nearly same cost but HUGE difference in content/updates?

Oh yeah. Rockstar North:Infinity Ward::Rockstar:Activision & Team Bond:Treyarch::Rockstar:Activision

First off, COD does have the same publisher every year. They vary by developer which is a huge difference.

COD shipped with 16 maps so if you accept that 4-maps are worth $15 (I don't) then it is a good investment.

Your sports game argument is too nonsensical to even address.

Lastly, you seem to be missing the whole point. My argument is these yearly adjustments make the games inaccessible to those who don't buy them every year regardless of price.

You're a fucking idiot! 1st off COD comes out every year but not from the same publisher. So it's really an every two year cycle. Also COD multiplayer is different. for $60 you're getting all new maps. When you consider a 4-map-pack cost $15 paying $60 for a new game and new maps is hardly expensive.

With sports games you need a new one every year because you should be constantly improving the game. If you're happy with 2011 then don't buy 2012. I personally would buy every 3yrs on Madden.

What next? Free upgrades for life on FIFA?!!

Thanks Andrew! I agree with your point completely. Although Foxconn is not Apple's problem, they could use an alternative company to make their products. At the end of the day I think it comes down to resources and profits. Moving Apple's entire operation would be a pretty big ordeal and I'm sure would hurt production. With 90+ BILLION you'd think they could take the hit though.

Great article -- Granted, I'm no fan of Apple or their questionable business practices (regardless of where their products are made) but the question now exists, where do I find a smartphone that has been independently developed and built outside of the foxconn world? It's practically an impossibility.

However, the issue could also be seen right there in my very question -- I do not like the methods enforced by a company (foxconn) therefore I choose not to do business with them or anyone who does; with Apple's massive earnings, it seems that they'd like to continue their success regardless of what sacrifices are made for their products to be made. Why don't they follow the same ideology and take a proactive role in finding a solution to having their products made by companies with better working conditions?
